Why We're Doing This

Too many promising IT and Computer Science students in Northern Virginial lack access to computers they can use for school. Though laptop programs in Arlington Schools and the public computers at libraries are useful for word processing or browsing the web, the access restrictions on these devices prevent students from experimenting with computer security, administration, and programming. 

To close this gap, the Social Justice Computing Laptops for Learners program provides kids in our schools with loaned laptops for real learning. These laptops run free open source operating systems with full administrative access, so our students can install software, run local servers, and publish their own work - -work that restricted school-issued devices don't allow them to do. For long-term students, loaned laptops are fully gifted.
